Back to Basics

My brother and I went shopping on Melrose Avenue, where I came across the most luxuriously soft basics by Alternative Earth. I've been in the market for a gray racerback tank top for a while now. You know how most people own a basic white shirt or pair of sweat pants with no conscience memory how they acquired them? Not this girl. I have absolutely no basics. And if I DO own a pair of sweat pants, I can tell you exactly when and where I bought them because it was such a big deal finally getting a pair. 2006. Express. I still hate the bejeweled hem.

This is one of life's mysteries I still haven't figured out. Where do people inherit their plushy over-sized sweatshirts and loungewear? I don't own a single stitch of comfort clothing. This makes me sad.

In any event, today I bought this eco-heather racerback tank by Alternative Earth. Celebrate good times.

In addition, my poor brother had to sit around for MINUTES while I debated the merits of a pair of "lounge pants" by the same brand. They came in two particular shades that I liked: Eco-Black and Eco-Brown. If that wasn't too taxing to choose, I also wasn't sure if I preferred the slimming effect of a size Small or the billowing comfort of a size Medium.

I mean, where am I going to wear these exactly? If it's just around the house, I want to be comfortable. But they're actually borderline cute enough to wear for light outdoor activities. Grocery shopping. A movie in Burbank (not Hollywood). The book store. If I buy a small, will they shrink when I wash them? Should I just buy the mediums and wash them in warm water? These are all considerations when trying to be "casual."

I decided to sleep on it. The right answer will present itself after a few hours of reading "Mia & Woody: Love and Betrayal" and a good night's rest.

See You in Hell, Peacock Feathers.

You had the world by a string, Peacock Feathers. Then you let it spool away. It was over exposure that led to your inevitable downfall. You were everywhere: on headbands, belts, hair clips, earrings, tattoos, necklaces. You were always the life of the party, the visual interest to any outfit. We trusted you with our accessories and in some ways, ourselves. But now that trust is gone. And the children have gone to boarding school.

So get your shit and get out.

Marilyn Shorts

American Apparel knows exactly how to get me in their pants because once I saw these Marilyn Monroe "Tap Shorts," I got naked fast. They're so perfect and surprisingly comfortable, made of a light stretch cotton. I wore mine with a sheer black Oxford shirt from H&M ($12).

The wardrobe makeover is making progress. I bought a pair of Boyfriend Jeans from H&M that were part of the $10 off sale - however, my distracted sales clerk accidentally rung them up $10 total and this is where moral flexibility comes in handy.

I also got a gray cardigan ($17) so now I can dress like a British school boy, if need be. My next goal: find a pair of cool granny boots.

Birthday Dress

For my birthday, my husband got me this incredible "Tea and Sweets Dress" from Anthropolgie. The gently pleated skirt, macaroon appliques, and floral print are so whimsical. I'm completely enamored.

Jumpsuit Me

With my 24th birthday around the corner, I decided to treat myself to vintage jumpsuit today. I found this one on Bustown Modern, but being impatient, I knew I couldn't wait 5 days to bid. So I did the next geekiest thing and scrolled through 34 pages on Etsy to find the exact same jumpsuit. Almost. It's produced by the same label and is 98% identical except it has a paint-stroke print instead of floral. Also: $18. Not too shabby for a complete outfit.

Every time I list a jumpsuit, they fly out of my studio so it's safe to say the trend is bangin' right now. I'm definitely a fan, but as my personal style has been shifting, I've been a little pickier about what hangs in my closet. Right now, I'm crazy about draping. Not "Grecian" and not (necessarily) "Harem" either, but this really indie LA drape that's so modern.

My husband laments this trend because it usually goes hand-in-hand with over-sized garments that "hide your beautiful tits." Dually noted. I'm also big on deep plunging V-necks, side boob, and sheer. Just sayin.

Suffice it so say, this jumpsuit appeals to my raging hard-on for drapeage. I absolutely adore the batwing dolman sleeves and cinched waist. Throw a belt on there and POW! I'm horny.

J'adore Mon Tutu

My husband's family was in town this weekend from Pensacola, Florida. It was so much fun showing my 17-year-old sister-in-law all that LA fashion has to offer: from H&M to Chanel. Although we couldn't afford anything from Rodeo Drive, I do believe this incredible tutu from H&M more than made up for it. Teah got one in black and I bought this powder pink one.

What thrills me about a great tutu is just how many ways you can wear it. I googled "H&M tutu" for inspiration and I couldn't believe the vast creativity out there. One girl wore her tutu with a band shirt and Converse All Stars. Another girl added a cropped leather jacket for this rock n' roll contrast. Then a fellow blogger, Sara (below), went from a more feminine look with gray tights and ballerina slippers.

I'm in love. I can't wait to wear mine. I'm actually hoping to find the perfect over-sized nautical blue and white striped top to wear with it. Something that drapes long so you only see the bottom two ruffles peeking out from the bottom.

Tutu-dles,
